Last Friday night Thomas and I went to a Supper Series Dinner at Veritas. The theme was hip hop, and we had a blast!
Supper Series Dinner at Veritas
I love a good wine dinner, and Veritas puts on some of the best! Once a month for the better part of the year, there is a Supper Series Dinner at Veritas. You can see the full event schedule here! Each dinner has a totally different theme, and there are many guest chefs featured. Veritas invited me to the May Supper Series featuring Randi Brady of Diversified Vines. Randi is known for her “Taste the Playlist” events where she brings wine and hip hop together. Randi came up from Atlanta and put our winery dinner to music!
My date for the evening:
Course One
Passed Apps with the 2022 Veritas Viognier
The passed apps were so good! This was a fried Virginia oyster with a hydro lettuce and caviar ranch (I’m pulling these descriptions right from the menu!)
And OMG – these mushrooms were stuffed with pimento cheese and I believe had a pork on top. Such a great combo!
The Setting
Some of the Supper Series dinners are outdoors, but ours was in the beautiful Veritas ballroom.
I loved the disco ball centerpieces! We were assigned tables, and we were seated next to a guy who we discovered lives three doors down from us!
Opening Remarks
As the dinner began, we were introduced to Randi Brady along with Veritas winemaker Emily Hodson and CEO George Hodson. They explained how the music influenced the meal and what to expect as each course began.
You’ll see on the menu below there is a signature song for each dish, but then as we enjoyed eating more songs flowed onto the playlist in a similar style. I think originally they had envisioned the dance floor opening at the end of the meal, but so many people were inspired by the music there were dancers at each course! I honestly had no idea what to expect when I RSVPed for this event, and it exceeded all expectations. It was unlike any other dinner I have attended!
First Course
“Southern Hospitality” – Ludacris
We had the Veritas Scintilla NV with some really delicious fried Virginia seafood, slaws, and sauces. Everything was passed on platters, family style.
Second Course
“I’m Good” – Clipse Featuring Pharrell
Paired with the 2023 Rosé, which I absolutely loved. It was my favorite wine of the night!
The lighting got dimmer, but this bright salad was really complex with orzo, asparagus, pecorino, lemon, shitake mushrooms, and a grilled ramp dressing.
Third Course
“Juicy” – Notorious B.I.G.
Paired with the 2017 Cabernet Franc
We enjoyed pepper jack mashed potatoes, roasted tomatoes, and a porchetta. I just had to look up what a porchetta was because I am still not sure even after eating it! According to Wikipedia: “Porchetta is a savory, fatty, and moist boneless pork roast of Italian culinary tradition. The carcass is deboned and spitted or roasted traditionally over wood for at least eight hours, fat and skin still on.” It was SO unique – a super crispy skin, with layers of fat on in the middle and then a more gamey meat in the middle (that may have been liver?!)
Dessert
“Get Light” – Nas
Omg – I loved this Strawberry Clafoutis! We enjoyed it with the 2021 Kenmar dessert wine. I had to be careful not to overdrink because everything tasted so perfectly together.
And then the dance floor blew up!
These two kicked it off and it was packed like a wedding before long – thanks to DJ Nobe!
