✅ You’ll Need
- Chicken Breasts: Use large, boneless, skinless chicken breasts. Cutting them horizontally into fillets ensures they cook evenly and quickly.
- Salt and Pepper: Adjust to your taste preference.
- Vegetable Oil: It is used for searing the chicken. It has a high smoke point, making it ideal for browning the chicken without burning.
- Butter: Adds richness to the sauce and helps in making the roux. We recommend unsalted butter to control the saltiness of the dish.
- Garlic: Freshly minced garlic is key for the best flavor.
- Flour: Used to make a roux, which thickens the sauce. All-purpose flour works perfectly for this recipe.
- Chicken Broth: Use low-sodium chicken broth to control the salt content.
- Heavy Cream: Adds creaminess and richness to the sauce. Do not substitute with milk, as it won’t achieve the same consistency.
- Worcestershire Sauce: It balances the richness with its tangy, savory notes.
- Honey: Adds a subtle sweetness that balances the savory and tangy elements in the sauce.
- Dijon Mustard: Adds a slight tang and depth of flavor. It also helps emulsify the sauce.
- Onion Powder, Oregano, Basil, Parsley: These dried herbs and seasonings enhance the overall flavor profile of the dish.
- Parmesan Cheese: Use freshly grated Parmesan cheese for the best flavor and texture. Pre-grated cheese often contains additives that prevent it from melting smoothly.
- Lemon Juice: Freshly squeezed lemon juice adds a bright, acidic note.
- Fresh Parsley: Adds a pop of color and a hint of freshness to the finished dish.
🔪 How to Make Garlic Parmesan Chicken
Cut the chicken breasts lengthwise into thinner slices. Cover with plastic wrap and flatten to ½ inch thick with a meat mallet.
Season both sides of each chicken piece with salt and pepper.
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the chicken in batches, 4-5 minutes per side until golden brown. Transfer to a plate, cover with foil, and turn off the heat.
Turn the heat to medium-high and melt the butter in the same skillet. Add flour and garlic, cooking for about a minute while stirring.
In a measuring cup, combine the chicken broth, heavy cream, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon, honey, onion powder, oregano, basil, and parsley.
Gradually add the sauce mixture, stirring constantly. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 4-5 minutes until it reduces.
Lower the heat and gradually add Parmesan cheese, stirring constantly. Mix in the lemon juice. Return the chicken to the skillet, spoon sauce over it, and cook for 3-5 minutes until the sauce thickens.
Garnish with parsley and serve.
👨🍳 Pro Tips
- Cheese: Grate Parmesan from a block for better melting and flavor. We recommend Belgioioso Parmesan.
- Chicken broth: Use low-sodium chicken broth. Substitute with Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, or Sauvignon Blanc if desired.
- Skillet: Use a 12-inch skillet for proper sauce thickening.
- Gravy Master: Optional: Add a few drops for a darker sauce color.
- Spinach: Add some spinach at the end if you want.
🗄️ Storage
Store in an airtight container. Refrigerate for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months. Leftovers freeze and reheat well.
Tools For This Recipe
- Meat Tenderizer: We use this almost every time I cook.
- Kitchen Tongs: Perfect for turning the chicken while it sears.
- Spice Rack: This one makes measuring seasonings quick and easy. A big time saver.
- Cheese Grater: Always shred cheese from a block for better melting and taste. Pre-shredded cheese contains cellulose, which prevents it from melting well.
- Measuring Spoons: We have these ones.
- Garlic Press: Makes mincing fresh garlic easy. Fresh garlic is highly recommended for this recipe.
